Like a network of weavers’ nests nestled into a natural amphitheatre in Volcanoes National Park, Bisate Lodge by Wilderness Safaris is Rwanda’s first eco-sensitive, luxury safari lodge. Centred on the park’s endangered mountain gorilla trail, the lodge adheres to strict environmentally responsible standards. The design concept for the interiors was ‘purpose is the new luxury’.
The interiors bring the lush surrounding rainforest indoors through the use of emerald green textiles and hand-made tiles throughout the six opulent en-suite forest villas and the communal dining and bar areas. The fireplaces are built with volcanic stone from the area. The rich culture of Rwanda is present in the many furnishings specifically selected for their pattern resembling Imigongo, an age-old art form of geometric markings in black and white, unique to the country. Herringbone parquet flooring, woven benches, mixed pattern fabric armchairs and green leather chandeliers all mirror the shapes of Imigongo throughout the space.

Black and white cow hides add texture and reflect the way of life of the neighbouring villagers. Inspired by the eco-conscious ethos, contemporary chandeliers made with upcycled green glass bottles make an eye-catching case for recycled materials. The spherical shape of the thatched buildings embrace the richly-textured interiors that layer Rwandan art, culture and environment.
