Jabali Ridge

JABALI RIDGE, ASILIA AFRICA
RUAHA NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA
DESIGN BY ARTICHOKE

The natural landscape guided every design decision behind this stylish lodge nestled between sun-baked boulders.

The boulders surrounding the remote Jabali Ridge were the inspiration behind the entire design. Respectful of the environment, the eight suites are nestled among the boulders and designed around them, with some cutting through the floors to become part of the space. Louvred shutters can be opened up completely to the outdoors. The bungalows were built by local craftsmen with locally-sourced wood. Stripped of colour, the camp blends seamlessly with its surroundings, invisible to the human eye from a distance. Natural vegetable dyes were used to create an ombre effect on the linens and mosquito nets to mimic the gradients of the surrounding rocks inhabited by families of hyrax. Bed throws and scatter cushions were dyed with eucalyptus, leaving an imprint of the plant on the fabric to look like the textured trunks of the surrounding baobab trees.
